When reviewing our grooming menu at Chima Pet Grooming, you might see the term sanitary trim and wonder what exactly it entails. While it isn't the most glamorous topic, it is one of the most essential services we provide for the health and cleanliness of Miami's pets.

What is a Sanitary Trim?

A sanitary trim (often called a "sani-trim" or "hygiene clip") involves carefully shaving or trimming the hair around a pet's private areas—specifically the groin, underbelly, and around the anus. The goal is to keep the hair in these areas short enough so that urine and feces do not get caught in the fur when the pet goes to the bathroom.

Who Needs a Sanitary Trim?

Any dog or cat with medium to long hair is a candidate for a sanitary trim. Breeds like Golden Retrievers, Pomeranians, Shih Tzus, Persian cats, and Maine Coons have thick fur "pants" on their hind legs. Without a trim, this long fur acts like a net, catching waste and creating a smelly, unhygienic mess. Short-haired breeds typically do not require this service.

Preventing Infections and Mats

When urine and feces become trapped in long fur, it doesn't just smell bad—it is highly irritating to the skin. Urine scald can cause painful, red burns on the skin, while trapped feces can lead to severe bacterial infections. Furthermore, the moisture causes the fur to mat tightly against the skin, making removal extremely painful for the pet.
